2025 World Athletics Championships: Ghana Banks Medal Hopes on Yeboah, Amankwah and Relay Teams

GHANA’S medal ambitions at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo now rest on the shoulders of high jumper Rose Yeboah, middle-distance star Alex Amankwah, rising sprinter Ibrahim Fuseini and the ever-reliable men’s 4x100m relay team,following a disappointing return in the men’s 100 metres.

National men’s 100m record holder Abdul-Rasheed Saminu saw his dream run come to an end yesterday after narrowly missing out on the final.The 21-year-old University of South Florida student clocked 10.08 seconds to place fourth in heat three of the semi-finals, finishing 12th overall.

It was a cruel end to what had been a promising debut,after he had earlier impressed with a 10.09-second run to place second in the preliminary heats.

Saminu’s exit came a day after compatriot Benjamin Azamati bowed out in the opening heats,leaving Ghana without a finalist in the blueriband event.

The pair will now regroup with their teammates for Saturday’s eagerly awaited 4x100m relay — a traditional medal hope for Ghana — with the final scheduled for the championship’s closing day on Sunday,September 21.

Fuseini in spotlight

Before the relays,all eyes will turn to Ibrahim Fuseini, who launches his men’s 200m campaign on Wednesday,September 17.

The semi-finals follow the next day,with the final slated for Friday,September 19.

Ghana’s only female athlete in Tokyo,Rose Yeboah,will make her debut in the women’s high jump qualifiers on Thursday, September 18.She is tipped to reach the final,which takes place on Sunday.

Meanwhile,Alex Amankwah,the experienced 800m specialist,begins his bid for glory on Thursday, September 20,sharing the day’s spotlight with Yeboah.

If all goes well,Ghana could end the championships with a dramatic double on the final day — Yeboah in the high jump final followed by the 4x100m relay showdown — as the nation chases a longawaited medal on the global stage.
