2026 World Cup qualifiers: Ghana’s revenge mission against Comoros falls flat in Moroni

The BlackStars of Ghana have lost their first game in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers after succumbing to a 1-0 defeat to stubborn Comoros at the Omnisports stadium on Tuesday, November 21.

The Ghanaians could not live up to expectations as the Coelacanths took advantage of their defensive woes to sweep all three points.

Both teams had a fair share of possession in the early minutes, hoping to capitalize on their chances to break the virginity of the game.

The chants from the Comorians sent a signal to Chris Hughton’s side of what a place in the World Cup would mean to them.

Six minutes into the game, Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo was served with a golden opportunity which could have gotten the four-time African champions ahead but failed to bury it.

The Black Stars were still in control of the game until Hertha Berlin forward Myziane Maolida broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute after he danced through a weak Ghanaian defense to beat goalkeeper Richard Ofori who was left in a state of confusion.

After recess, Kudus Mohammed, Ernest Nuamah and Majeed Ashimeru were some introductions who were hoping to stir affairs for the visitors to save Chris Hughton’s job, which is currently on the lifeline.

Comoros adapted to a defensive play which saw them make some impressive clearances to crown the day with their successive second win in their World Cup campaign.
