George Afriyie Condemns GFA Term Extension Proposal as Undemocratic and Unfair

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has strongly criticised the current GFA President, Kurt Okraku, over alleged attempts to extend the presidential term limit from two to three terms.

Afriyie, a seasoned football administrator, stated unequivocally that no football club in Ghana has endorsed the proposed extension, describing the initiative as “a kangaroo process”—a phrase often used to refer to proceedings that are perceived as unfair or lacking transparency.

“This is a process that is not only unsupported but also undemocratic,” Afriyie remarked during an interview with Gideon Okyere Anim on Original TV. He stressed that any amendments to the GFA’s governance structure must be undertaken in consultation with key stakeholders, particularly the clubs.

The controversy surrounding the proposed extension has sparked renewed debate over the leadership and future direction of the GFA. Kurt Okraku, who assumed office in 2019, has yet to issue a public response to the growing opposition.

Afriyie’s comments underscore the rising tensions within Ghanaian football circles, with many stakeholders questioning the transparency and inclusiveness of the GFA’s decision-making processes. There is a growing call for greater democratic engagement and accountability in shaping the future of football governance in the country.
