GFA Axe Otto Addo as Black Stars Crisis Deepens Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

The Ghana Football Association has dismissed Black Stars head coach Otto Addo with less than three months remaining before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision follows a disappointing run of results in pre-World Cup friendlies, where Ghana suffered consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany. The final blow came on Monday evening, when the Black Stars fell 2–1 to Germany at the MHPArena in Stuttgart.

Addo, 50, who was reappointed in 2024 to steer the four-time African champions, has now been relieved of his duties after what sources describe as a high-level and decisive meeting between GFA officials and the Ministry of Youth and Sports shortly after the match.

In an official statement, the GFA confirmed the development:

“The Ghana Football Association has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately.

“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours.

“The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”

Addo, who spent his entire club career in Germany, earned 15 caps for Ghana and was part of the squad that competed at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. His return to the national team dugout in 2024 was initially greeted with optimism, but recent performances have raised serious concerns about the team’s readiness for the global showpiece.

Ghana now faces a race against time to appoint a new head coach capable of revitalising the squad ahead of the tournament. The Black Stars have been drawn in a challenging group alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

With the World Cup set to be staged across United States, Canada and Mexico this summer, the pressure is now firmly on the GFA to make a swift and decisive appointment that can restore belief and competitiveness within the Black Stars camp.
