ASAC 2026: Ghana’s Florence Agyemang Wins Another Medal for Host Nation

Ahmed Ajayba Aliy stormed to gold in the women’s 400m final at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships, producing a commanding performance to cross the line in 51.54 seconds.

The Ethiopian held off a strong challenge from Obakeng Kamberuk of Botswana, who claimed silver in 51.79 seconds, while Ghana’s Florence Agyemang delighted home supporters with a brilliant bronze-medal finish after clocking 51.87 seconds in a fiercely contested race.

Agyemang’s podium finish marks another impressive moment for Ghana at the championships, as she battled strongly down the final straight to secure a place among Africa’s elite quarter-milers.

Egypt’s Mohamed Basant narrowly missed out on a medal after finishing fourth in 52.00 seconds, with South Africa’s Viljoen Marlie placing fifth in 52.41 seconds.

Burkina Faso’s Sibiri Sita came home sixth in 52.65 seconds, ahead of Malessar Elodie Dhri of Congo in seventh with 52.97 seconds, while Kenya’s Chebet Mercy finished eighth in 53.68 seconds.

The final delivered a thrilling spectacle, with the top three separated by less than half a second in one of the standout races of the championships.
