President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has defended the Black Stars’ recent international friendly against Mexico, insisting the match served as an important assessment exercise ahead of major competitions.

Following Ghana’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico, Okraku stated that the encounter was primarily designed to expose several of the nation’s emerging Under-23 talents to high-level international football as preparations intensify for the upcoming African qualifiers for the next Olympic Games.

According to the GFA President, the technical team also used the game to assess fringe players who are seeking to cement their places in the senior national team setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“Objective accomplished,” Okraku noted in a social media post after the match.

He explained that the fixture offered significant playing time and international exposure to a number of young players who are expected to feature prominently in Ghana’s Olympic qualifying campaign, while also allowing less regular Black Stars players the opportunity to impress the coaching staff.

The GFA boss further disclosed that Ghana’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will officially be announced on June 1, heightening anticipation among supporters across the country.

Despite the defeat, Okraku urged Ghanaians to continue rallying behind the national team as preparations continue for future assignments.

The Black Stars’ performance against Mexico has generated mixed reactions among supporters, with some fans expressing concerns over the result, while others believe the match provided valuable lessons and experience for the younger members of the squad.

Ghana’s technical handlers are expected to continue evaluating players in the coming days before finalising the team for the global tournament.
