FIFA has officially appointed experienced Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio to take charge of the opening fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup between hosts Mexico and South Africa.
The highly anticipated curtain-raiser, which will mark the start of the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup, is expected to attract a global television audience running into hundreds of millions, placing Sampaio and his officiating team firmly in the spotlight.
