AFCON 2023: Andre Onana boycotts Cameroon’s opening game following Manchester United, Spurs clash

Manchester United shot-stopper, Andre Onana has opted out of Cameroon’s opening game in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament following his sides premier league clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The 27-year-old initially reached an agreement with his national team to feature in the opening game, which was a day after the English Premier League clash. 

 Onana announced his retirement from the national team in 2022, which was an assurance of he not being available in the AFCON.

After several consultations by the Cameroonian Football Federation, the player rescinded his decision, hence making him available for the competition.

Andre Onana would be take charge of the goalpost in Cameroon’s second game against Senegal which is scheduled on January 19,2024.

Cameroon is caged in group C alongside Gambia, Guinea and Senegal.
