Former Ghana national team coach, Charles Kwabla Akonnor, has officially begun his tenure as head coach of Kenyan Premier League side Gor Mahia FC, following a formal introduction to the playing body and technical staff on Monday.

Akonnor, who previously managed Ghanaian clubs Asante Kotoko SC and Sekondi Eleven Wise FC, as well as the senior national team, the Black Stars, was warmly received at the club’s training grounds in Nairobi.

Accompanied by his newly assembled backroom staff, the Ghanaian tactician engaged in an extensive session with the players, laying out his coaching philosophy, expectations, and long-term vision for the club. He emphasised discipline, tactical awareness, and teamwork as the cornerstones of his approach.

The meeting also served as an opportunity for players and staff to interact with the new leadership and gain insight into the direction the team will be taking under Akonnor’s stewardship.

Akonnor takes over at a crucial time, as Gor Mahia—record Kenyan champions—seek to reclaim domestic dominance and improve their standing in continental competitions. His appointment has generated significant excitement among the club’s supporters, many of whom are optimistic about his wealth of experience and leadership credentials.

The 2025/26 season promises to be a defining one for Gor Mahia, and Akonnor’s first task will be to prepare the team for their CAF Champions League campaign, which kicks off next month.
