Cairo, 25 September 2025 – Egyptian football powerhouse Al Ahly have formally submitted a lucrative €4.8 million contract offer to Portuguese manager Bruno Lage, just two weeks after his dismissal from Benfica, where he was replaced by compatriot José Mourinho.

Lage, 49, who previously managed Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League, finds himself at the centre of intense speculation as Al Ahly look to appoint a new head coach capable of maintaining their dominance both domestically and on the African continent. The Cairo giants are currently preparing for another campaign in the CAF Champions League, where expectations remain sky-high following their record tally of eleven titles.

Al Ahly’s interest in Lage reflects the club’s ambition to reinforce its technical bench with European expertise, as they aim to extend their dominance not only in Egypt but across Africa. The Portuguese tactician, known for his emphasis on structured attacking football and nurturing young talent, is viewed as a strong candidate to continue the club’s legacy.

The Red Devils recently parted ways with their previous head coach after a string of inconsistent performances and are determined to secure a high-profile replacement before the resumption of the Egyptian Premier League and their continental commitments.

If appointed, Lage will become the latest in a long line of European coaches entrusted with leading Al Ahly, a club widely regarded as the most successful in African football history.
