Asante Kotoko have reportedly parted company with winger Johnson Oppong, barely two months after his arrival, in a move that reflects the club’s uncompromising approach to restructuring their squad ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Oppong, 27, joined the Porcupine Warriors earlier this summer amid high expectations, owing to his wealth of experience both domestically and abroad. However, he failed to make the desired impact, prompting the club to cut his stay short.
The attacker made his debut in the Toyota Cup against South African giants Kaizer Chiefs but struggled to secure regular playing time thereafter. He was handed a starting role in the GHALCA Top Four clash with Heart of Lions but was omitted from the decisive encounter against Hearts of Oak, further fuelling speculation over his future.
According to club insiders, management grew dissatisfied with his performances in both training sessions and competitive fixtures, ultimately leading to the decision to terminate his contract.
Oppong had previously shone for Dreams FC during their impressive CAF Confederation Cup semi-final run and enjoyed stints in Europe with C.S. Marítimo (Portugal), FC Zlín (Czech Republic) and KF Kukësi (Albania).
With the transfer window nearing its close, Kotoko are already exploring potential replacements, with Ibrahim Sulley, Walid Fuseini and Evans Osei Wusu all reportedly on the club’s radar.
