Former Dreams FC forward Johnson Owusu Oppong is on the verge of leaving Asante Kotoko barely two months after joining the club on a free transfer.
Reports indicate that the Kumasi-based giants are considering terminating his contract due to underwhelming performances during their pre-season campaign. The club’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) is said to be disappointed with the 27-year-old’s output and could end his stay in the coming days.
Head coach Abdul Karim Zito and his technical team have also come under scrutiny from management for recommending the signing of players deemed unfit, including Owusu Oppong and two defenders.

Owusu Oppong signed a two-year deal with the Porcupine Warriors in June, bringing with him extensive experience in both domestic and European football. However, he has struggled for game time during pre-season, having made his debut against Kaizer Chiefs in the 2025 Toyota Cup. He featured only once in the GHALCA Top Four tournament, against Heart of Lions, and was left out of the squad for the decisive clash with Hearts of Oak.
With the transfer window closing on 31 August, Kotoko are already eyeing reinforcements, with former Ghana U20 star Ibrahim Sulley and ex-Nsoatreman midfielder Walid Fuseini reportedly high on their list. Both players are being lined up to strengthen the squad following Owusu Oppong’s struggles.
Despite his disappointing stint at Kotoko, Owusu Oppong boasts an impressive CV, having played a key role in Dreams FC’s run to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals. Abroad, he enjoyed four seasons with Portuguese side C.S. Marítimo, a year with FC Zlín in the Czech Republic, and another campaign with KF Kukësi in Albania.
The Porcupine Warriors are currently fine-tuning preparations for the 2025/26 season, which will see them return to the CAF Confederation Cup after a two-year absence. They are set to face Nigerian side Kwara United in the preliminary round.
Before the continental campaign, Kotoko will take on Bibiani Gold Stars on 31 August in the Champion of Champions clash at Dun’s Park, before beginning their Premier League season away to Berekum Chelsea.
