Ashanti Regional Minister Hosts Sports Minister for Assessment Tour of Baba Yara Stadium

Kumasi, Ghana – The Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Kofi Adams, on Wednesday paid a working visit to the Ashanti Region as part of a national tour to assess the state of sports infrastructure across the country. He was received at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council by the Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah.

The Sports Minister was accompanied by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Madam Wilhelmina Asamoah, Technical Director Hon. Betty Mensah, officials from the National Sports Authority (NSA), and other key stakeholders. The delegation visited the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi to evaluate the level of deterioration and determine the extent of work required for its rehabilitation.

The Baba Yara Stadium, once a premier venue for both domestic and international sporting events, has been banned from hosting competitive matches due to its current dilapidated condition. The inspection forms part of a broader government agenda to prioritise the redevelopment of major sports facilities nationwide.

Speaking after the tour, Hon. Osei-Mensah expressed deep concern over the state of the stadium, noting its historic significance not only to the Ashanti Region but to Ghana as a whole. He called for swift and collaborative action to restore the facility to its former glory.

“We cannot allow such a national treasure to fall into further disrepair. The Baba Yara Stadium is more than a sports venue—it is a symbol of our regional pride and a vital part of our sporting legacy,” the Regional Minister stated.

Hon. Osei-Mensah also emphasised the need to complement government efforts with support from the private sector and local communities. “Beyond government intervention, we will actively engage the corporate community and mobilise local support to assist with the rehabilitation. It is our collective responsibility to preserve this facility for future generations,” he added.

The visit ended with a renewed commitment from all parties to prioritise the revamp of the stadium, which is expected to play a key role in Ghana’s future sporting ambitions.

The Baba Yara Stadium, originally opened in 1959 and last renovated in 2008, has served as a home ground for several national teams and clubs. Its strategic location and historical importance make it a focal point for football and athletics in the country.

As the government ramps up infrastructure development ahead of upcoming international tournaments, restoring the Baba Yara Stadium remains a top priority for stakeholders within Ghana’s sports sector.
