Chelle opting for reserved approach to Tunisia clash
Eric Chelle says Mali will wait for Tunisia to come at them in their second TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2020 Group E match on Saturday evening.
The Eagles soared to a 2-0 victory over South Africa in their first match, while Tunisia were stunned by a 1-0 loss to Namibia.
The opening result puts Tunisia in a precarious position where anything less than a victory could spell the end of their TotalEnergies CAF AFCON journey in Cote d’Ivoire.
Speaking ahead of the important tie, Chelle said he knew that Tunisia were desperate for a result and would naturally come at them.
“They are desperate for a result. We are going to wait for them and see what they have to offer.
We will be cautious and see what they have to offer. We will play in the transition and wait for them to come to us,” said Chelle.
Chelle was joined at the pre-match press conference by German-based defensive midfielder, Diadie Samassekou who cautioned against complacency, adding that qualification to the knockout stages was not official yet and that they still need to approach the two remaining games with the required intensity.
“We have not qualified yet. Yes, we are in a good position but there are two difficult matches that still need to be played to assure us a place in the next round.
There are no easy games and us winning the first game boosted our confidence but does not necessarily make the rest of the matches easy.
We need to remain focused” cautioned Samassekou.
Kick off at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium on Saturday is scheduled for 20h00.
