Crisis at Al Ahly: Jose Riveiro Shown the Exit After Four Months

Egyptian football giants, Al Ahly, have officially parted company with head coach Jose Riveiro after only four months at the helm.

The decision comes in the wake of the Red Devils’ 2-0 defeat to Pyramids FC at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday night, a result which left the reigning African champions with just one victory from their opening four Egyptian Premier League fixtures. They currently sit 12th in the early-season table.

the club’s hierarchy convened an emergency board meeting on Sunday morning to decide the Spaniard’s future. Following lengthy deliberations, Riveiro’s contract was terminated by mutual consent.

In an official statement, Al Ahly said:

“The club thanked Mr Jose Riveiro, the first team’s technical director, and his backroom staff for their efforts over the past period, and the contractual relationship was terminated by mutual consent.

This decision followed meetings of the Planning Committee, attended by club president Captain Mahmoud El Khatib and sports director Captain Mohamed Youssef. The reports submitted by both the sports director and the technical director were reviewed in detail before the decision was reached.

The committee expressed its appreciation for the hard work and commitment Riveiro displayed during his time in charge, but acknowledged that results did not meet expectations, particularly at a time when the club seeks to fulfil the great ambitions of its supporters both domestically and on the continental stage.”

Riveiro, who joined Al Ahly on a two-year contract from South African side Orlando Pirates, had already come under intense scrutiny following the team’s failure to progress beyond the group stage of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States earlier this year.

The Planning Committee confirmed it will continue its discussions in the coming days to finalise the technical set-up that will lead the team into the next phase of the season.
