Democracy Cup Returns: Parliament Gears Up for Second Edition Launch

Parliament will officially launch the 2nd edition of the Democracy Cup on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at 3:00 PM. The ceremony will take place in the Justice D. F. Annan Auditorium at Parliament House .

Although the announcement didn’t include full details, the “Democracy Cup” was introduced last year as a football tournament featuring parliamentarians versus guest teams. In its inaugural edition, Members of Parliament played against a cohort of Black Stars legends in an exhibition match .

This initiative blends sports with civic engagement—encouraging community interaction, promoting democratic values, and fostering goodwill.

Asante Kotoko edged Hearts of Oak 2–1 in the first edition.

Kotoko opened the scoring with a Justice Blay penalty in the first half.

Hearts of Oak equalized early in the second through Asamoah Boateng.

Peter Amidu netted the winning goal for Kotoko around the 60th minute

Curtain‑Raiser: Parliament XI vs Black Stars Legends

Before the main event, a friendly match pitted parliamentarians against former Ghana Black Stars players (legends).

Result: Parliament XI triumphed 3–1.

Patrick Boakye‑Yiadom (MP for Obuasi East) gave Parliament the lead.

Sulley Muntari pulled a goal back for the legends with a free kick.

Hamza Ibrahim sealed the win with a brace, scoring once in the 85th minute and adding another in stoppage time .
