Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe bemoans lack of quality in the GPL

Board Member of Hearts of Oak, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has attributed low attendance at various league centers to lack of quality players in the league.

Spectatorship has become of huge concern to most stakeholders of the domestic league with connoisseurs of the game attributing it to various reasons.

In the previous season, there was a noticeable lack of turnout at stadiums for Ghana Premier League matches, raising concerns about fan interest and involvement in the league.

But Nyaho-Tamakloe who has played key roles in the administration of Ghana football for decades believes the problem of spectatorship has to do with quality players to attract supporters to the stadium.

The former Ghana FA President indicated that the low attendance has had serious financial effect on the clubs and need a prompt attention.

“Most of the current players don’t have the skills to attract supporters to the stadium. Supporters go to the stadium to watch good football and quality of the players but our current players don’t have that and that has contributed to the massive low attendance at our various league centers. Clubs are suffering because there is no revenue”, he told the Hearts of Oak media during the commemoration of the club’s 112th birthday celebration.

Advising the players to up their game to help curb the problem of low attendance at match venues, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe said, “some of the players have even forgotten the fact that they are professionals, they have forgotten that football is their source of income and can send them to a better club abroad only if they take it seriously. Some of them behave like they have no idea of what they are doing. If you perform very well, a club abroad might come for you and that’s where your finance will improved.”

Meanwhile, prior to the commencement of the 2022/23 league season, the GFA President Kurt Okraku has expressed his commitment to curtailing the issue of poor attendance at the stadium.

Okraku emphasised the importance of collaboration between the GFA, clubs, and the media to promote the league and increase attendance.

He believes that football serves as a unifying force and aims to leverage the sport to bring people together and enhance the popularity of football in Ghana.
