FIFA Orders Hearts of Oak to Pay $150,000 to Former Coach Rene Hiddink

FIFA’s Football Tribunal has ruled that Accra Hearts of Oak must pay Dutch technical director Rene Hiddink US $150,000 following the wrongful termination of his contract.

Hiddink was appointed in July 2023 on a three-year deal, but was dismissed just eight months later—prompting him to contest the termination at the Tribunal .

This ruling marks a landmark precedent, as FIFA acknowledged jurisdiction over a technical director dispute for the first time, recognising that such roles—often involved in training and tactical planning—are within the remit previously reserved for coaches .

30‑Day Deadline to Pay Former Player Francis Adjetey

In a separate but connected matter, FIFA has given Hearts of Oak 30 days to settle an outstanding payment of GH¢106,477.42 to former player Francis Adjetey, also citing wrongful contract termination .

This sum was originally mandated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on 26 February 2025, including 5% interest annually, retroactive to 15 September 2023, plus CHF 1,000 for legal costs .

FIFA’s 6 June 2025 letter deemed the CAS decision final and binding, warning that 20% of the GFA’s next FIFA Forward funding may be withheld if adherence fails .

It seems the club missed that deadline, triggering an automatic transfer ban; however, Hearts have attempted negotiations, offering partial payments—rejected by Adjetey .

Rene Hiddink US $150,000 Immediate FIFA-ordered payment

Francis Adjetey GH¢106,477.42 + 5% p.a., + CHF 1,000 legal costs 7 July 2025 (30 days from June letter) Possible 20% fund freeze, transfer ban

Why It Matters

The Hiddink case is a groundbreaking ruling that now sets a precedent for employment dispute rights for technical directors, broadening FIFA’s protective scope .

The Adjetey case emphasises widening accountability for African clubs, where failure to meet contractual obligations can bring real punitive consequences via CAS and FIFA.
