FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reiterated his opposition to the politicisation of football, expressing support for the eventual lifting of the ban imposed on Russian football following the outbreak of the Russia–Ukraine conflict.
Speaking amid ongoing global tensions, Infantino emphasised that football should remain a unifying force rather than a tool for political expression or division. He argued that the sport’s primary role is to bring people together across borders, cultures and ideologies, even during periods of international crisis.
Russia has been suspended from FIFA and UEFA competitions since 2022, a decision taken in response to the country’s military actions in Ukraine. The ban has prevented Russian national teams and clubs from participating in international tournaments, including World Cup qualifiers and European competitions.
