The former President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Chief Ben Nunoo Mensah, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama. This strategic appointment is seen as a significant addition to TOR’s leadership, given Chief Nunoo Mensah’s extensive background in governance, enterprise, and national service.

This new role adds to an already illustrious career that spans sports administration, business leadership, and traditional authority. It also reflects the government’s commitment to placing credible and results-oriented individuals at the helm of state institutions undergoing reform and revitalisation.

A Legacy of Transformational Leadership

Chief Ben Nunoo Mensah served as President of the Ghana Olympic Committee from 2016 to 2024. Under his leadership, Ghana’s participation in international sporting events saw renewed energy and competitiveness, with improved athlete welfare, transparent administrative structures, and stronger collaboration between sports federations and government agencies.

During his two terms, Ghana recorded increased medal hauls in the African Games and other continental events, as well as a greater emphasis on developing youth and female athletes. His stewardship culminated in the successful handover to current GOC President, Richard Akpokavie, in April 2024. The orderly and well-documented transition earned him wide praise for professionalism and accountability in sports governance.

Recognised by Tradition and Industry

In September 2024, Chief Ben Nunoo Mensah was enstooled Noyaa Mantse (Development Chief) by the Ga Traditional Council. The honour was in recognition of his lifelong dedication to community upliftment, sports development, and entrepreneurship training among the youth, particularly in Greater Accra.

Aside from his role in sports, Chief Nunoo Mensah is a distinguished entrepreneur and investor. He is known for empowering young Ghanaian business owners and building sustainable business models across various sectors. His philosophy of balancing profitability with social impact has made him a respected figure in the entrepreneurial space.

He holds a 10% equity stake in the Barari DV lithium concession, one of the most promising mineral resource developments in Ghana’s growing green minerals sector. Reports indicate that he is also positioned to benefit from gold extracted within the concession’s operational zone. His involvement in the mining sector aligns with Ghana’s push to locally participate in strategic mineral extraction and value addition.

A Call to Celebrate Excellence

Chief Nunoo Mensah’s appointment to the TOR board is expected to bring a wealth of experience and an ethical, visionary approach to the state-owned refinery, which is undergoing major restructuring aimed at restoring its operational viability and efficiency.

In light of these extraordinary achievements across sports, business, and national development, The Loop respectfully urges all Ghanaians, as well as members of the diaspora, to show appreciation and support for Chief Ben Nunoo Mensah. He is a man whose actions speak of dedication, excellence, and a deep commitment to Ghana’s progress.
