GFA Appoints Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars Head Coach Ahead of World Cup

The Ghana Football Association has officially named Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars, marking a decisive step in the team’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The appointment, confirmed by the GFA Executive Council in consultation with key stakeholders, brings an end to weeks of intense speculation following the departure of Otto Addo.

Queiroz arrives with a wealth of experience at the highest level of world football. The seasoned Portuguese tactician has managed some of the game’s most recognisable sides, including Real Madrid and Manchester United, while also taking charge of several national teams such as Portugal national football team, Iran national football team, Egypt national football team, Oman, Japan and Qatar.

Renowned for his tactical discipline and organisational acumen, Queiroz boasts an impressive World Cup résumé. He guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament, led Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 editions, earning plaudits for his side’s defensive resilience against some of the world’s elite teams.

At 73, he takes over at a pivotal moment for Ghana, with the global showpiece fast approaching. He is expected to begin work immediately, focusing on evaluating the squad, assembling his backroom staff and instilling his philosophy ahead of the tournament.

The Black Stars are set to open their World Cup campaign against Panama on 17 June in Toronto, before facing England and Croatia in what promises to be a challenging group.

The appointment underscores Ghana’s determination to lean on experience and proven expertise as they aim to make a significant impact on football’s biggest stage.
