The Ghana Football Association (GFA), in consultation with key stakeholders, has taken decisive steps to significantly bolster the Black Stars’ technical setup with the appointment of five highly experienced professionals ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The strategic reinforcements are aimed at enhancing tactical organisation, match preparation, performance analysis and player welfare as Ghana intensifies preparations for the World Cup qualification campaign.
French tactician Alain Ravera has been appointed as an Assistant Coach. Ravera brings extensive international experience, having previously served as an assistant coach with the Guinea national team and French Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco. His appointment is expected to strengthen the team’s tactical planning and technical execution.
He is joined on the technical bench by Black Queens Head Coach Kim Lars Björkegren. The Swedish trainer guided the Black Queens to a bronze medal finish at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and successfully secured qualification for the 2026 WAFCON, a competition he will continue to oversee alongside his new role with the men’s senior national team. His inclusion reflects the GFA’s commitment to cross-technical collaboration and shared expertise within Ghana’s national teams.
To further enhance scouting, match preparation and performance analysis, the GFA has appointed Spanish national José Daniel Martínez Alfonso. Martínez Alfonso currently serves as an assistant coach and video analyst with Major League Soccer side Atlanta FC, bringing modern analytical tools and international best practices to the Black Stars’ technical department.
The medical team has also been reinforced with the return of Carlos Lozano Romero as Team Physiotherapist. Lozano previously worked with the Black Stars during Ghana’s 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign in Qatar, and his reappointment is expected to strengthen injury management, rehabilitation and player fitness monitoring.
The GFA believes these appointments will provide the Black Stars with a more robust and professional backroom structure, capable of meeting the growing demands of international football. The newly appointed staff are expected to assume their roles immediately as preparations continue for upcoming qualifiers and international fixtures.
