Ghana Olympic Committee unveils New Committees to advance Olympic and Commonwealth Movement

1

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and Commonwealth Sports–Ghana have officially inaugurated 10 committees to drive sports development and advance the Olympic and Commonwealth Sports Movement in the country.

The committees, made up of carefully selected members, have been tasked with promoting sports development, particularly in schools and at the grassroots level, while also strengthening women’s participation in sports.

The committees inaugurated include Legal, Marketing, Fundraising and Sponsorship, Olympic Education, Culture and School Sports, Games and Technical, and National Federations Relations.

Others are Medical and Anti-Doping, Events and Programmes, Finance, Women in Sports, and Government Relations and Stakeholders.

At a brief swearing-in ceremony, Mr Mawuko Afadzinu, Vice President of the GOC, commended the members for their commitment to serving and urged them to remain dedicated to promoting the GOC’s vision. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in the members’ leadership, resilience, and collaborative spirit.

“So, I charge you today: be bold. Challenge outdated assumptions. Ask ‘why not?’ when you are told ‘this is how it’s done.’ Be accountable—not just to the GOC Executive Board, but to the young girl in Wa running barefoot who dreams of Olympic gold.

Tear down the walls between your committees. Your shared enemy is mediocrity, not each other. Be relentless.

You will face bureaucracy, cynicism, and budget constraints. See them not as obstacles, but as opponents to be defeated on the way to the podium,” he said.

He further congratulated the committee members, noting:

“You are now at the forefront of shaping the future of the Olympic Movement and sports in Ghana.”

Speaking on behalf of the committees, Kobby Woyome, Chairman of the Government Relations Sub-Committee, expressed their enthusiasm in working with the GOC.

He assured that they would leverage their experience and networks to advance sports development in the country.

Also in attendance at the ceremony was the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankra.
