Accra Hearts of Oak began their 2025/26 Ghana Premier League campaign with a disappointing stalemate, drawing 0-0 against newly-promoted Hohoe United FC at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday evening.
The Phobians dominated possession and created several opportunities, but poor finishing and resolute defending from the visitors denied them all three points. Hohoe United, making their maiden appearance in the top flight, impressed with their discipline and work rate, frustrating the hosts and earning a memorable point on their debut.
Hearts had the better of the first half, with the Phobians twice going close to scoring in the 20th-minute forcing a fine save from the Hohoe goalkeeper.
The match also treated fans to a special moment during recess, as award-winning dancehall artiste Stonebwoy thrilled the crowd with a surprise live performance. His energetic set sent the stadium buzzing, creating a carnival atmosphere that added colour to the season opener.
Speaking after the match, Hearts of Oak head coach, Mas-Ud- Didi Dramani expressed his disappointment:
“We wanted to start the season strongly, especially at home, but football is about taking your chances, and today we didn’t. Credit to Hohoe United — they were compact and made life difficult for us. It’s only the first game, and we’ll go back, correct our mistakes, and prepare better for Week Two.”
Hohoe United’s head coach, Abdul Rahim Bashiru, was delighted with his team’s resilience:
“For us, this is history — our first Premier League match, and to take a point away at Hearts of Oak is massive. The boys followed instructions, showed discipline, and fought for each other. We know it will be a long season, but this result gives us confidence that we can compete.”
The result sees both sides start the campaign with a single point. Hearts of Oak will now aim to register their first victory when they travel for their next fixture, while Hohoe United will look to build on this encouraging debut performance.
