Ghana Sports Fund Receives First Donation of GHS100,000 from National Investment Bank
The Ghana Sports Fund has received its first official donation, with the National Investment Bank (NIB) presenting a cheque for GHS100,000 to support the development of sport across the country.

The presentation, held on 13 February 2026, marks a significant milestone in efforts to mobilise financial resources to strengthen Ghana’s sporting sector. Officials of the Fund expressed appreciation to NIB for what they described as a timely and strategic intervention aimed at revitalising grassroots and elite sport.
The contribution is expected to serve as seed capital for the newly established Fund, which has been designed to attract corporate bodies, private institutions and individuals to invest in the long-term growth of sport in Ghana.
The Ghana Sports Fund has the potential to play a pivotal role in addressing some of the longstanding challenges confronting the sector. Key areas of impact may include:
1. Grassroots Development
The Fund could support the identification and nurturing of young talent through schools and community-based programmes. Investment at this level would help provide basic equipment, organise local competitions and train coaches, ensuring a steady pipeline of talent for national teams.
2. Infrastructure Improvement
Many sporting facilities across the country require renovation and modernisation. Financial backing from the Fund could be channelled into upgrading pitches, athletics tracks, indoor halls and training centres, particularly outside Accra, to promote nationwide participation.
3. Athlete Welfare and Preparation
The Fund may assist athletes with training grants, medical support, nutrition and international exposure. Enhanced preparation would strengthen Ghana’s competitiveness at major events, including continental championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games.
4. Capacity Building and Governance
Support could also be extended to sports federations to improve administration, transparency and technical expertise. Workshops, certification programmes and partnerships with international bodies would raise standards across disciplines.
5. Women’s and Para Sports Development
Targeted funding for women’s sport and para-athletes would promote inclusivity and ensure equal opportunities, aligning with global best practice in sports development.
Stakeholders have expressed optimism that NIB’s donation will inspire other corporate entities to contribute to the Fund, creating a sustainable financial base for Ghanaian sport.
If effectively managed and transparently administered, the Ghana Sports Fund could become a cornerstone of national sports policy, driving performance excellence while expanding participation at all levels.
