Ghanaian athletes based in the US continue to gear up ahead of African Games in Ghana.
Ghanaian athletes competing in the United States displayed remarkable talent and determination in recent competitions, setting the stage for the highly anticipated 13th African Games scheduled to be hosted by Ghana from March 8th to March 22nd, 2024. Athletes, both in Ghana and abroad, have been putting in their best efforts to secure a coveted spot in Team Ghana, where selection is solely based on merit. The weekend’s performances in both men and women categories have left sports enthusiasts excited and hopeful for Ghana’s representation at the prestigious international event.
Men’s 60m Sprint
The men’s 60m sprint witnessed outstanding performances by Ghanaian athletes. Rasheed Saminu delivered a powerful run with a time of 6.61 seconds, not only breaking his own personal best but also shattering the South Florida University school record. Barnabas Aggerh made a remarkable second attempt in the 60m, clocking a superb personal best of 6.64 seconds. This performance propelled him to the fourth position in Ghana’s 2024 60m ranking. Other notable performances in the men’s 60m include Solomon Hammond (6.70), Isaac Botsio (6.73), and Brock Appiah (6.75).
Women’s 60m Sprint
The women’s 60m sprint showcased the incredible talent of Ghanaian female athletes. Anita Afrifa and Doris Mensah both achieved personal bests, with Afrifa clocking 7.69 seconds and Mensah finishing at 8.65 seconds. Patience Boahemaa also showcased her skills with a time of 8.73 seconds.
Men’s 200m Sprint
In the men’s 200m sprint, Brock Appiah delivered a remarkable performance with a time of 21.21 seconds. Solomon Hammond followed closely with a time of 21.30 seconds, while Barnabas Aggerh completed the race in 22.06 seconds.
Women’s 200m Sprint
The women’s 200m sprint featured Anita Afrifa, who clocked an impressive time of 24.51 seconds. Benedicta Kwartemaa continued her fine form by running 24.48 seconds. Rafiatu Nuhu (24.69) and Hor Halutie (24.72) also showcased their talent in this category.
Women’s 400m and Men’s 400m
Several female athletes participated in the 400m event. Pearl Awanya set a personal best with a time of 53.72 seconds. Lovina Ewusi displayed her strength by crossing the finish line in 55.99 seconds. Rafiatu Nuhu recorded a time of 55.91 seconds, while Mercy Angaamchaab (58.63), Helena Klutsey-Carbo (59.32), and Gifty Oku (1:00.70) also gave their best efforts. In the men’s category, Charlse Frimpong recorded a season’s best time of 48.55 seconds, with Bossman Pinkrah finishing in 49.23 seconds.
800m and Mile Races
Etiam Torgbenu and Ishmeal Acheampong showcased their skills in the 800m, recording times of 2:01.41 and 1:54.66, respectively. Grace Kombetto participated in the women’s 800m, finishing in a time of 2:19.68.
Long Jump and Triple Jump
Abraham Seaneke impressed in the men’s Long Jump with a leap of 7.52 meters. Blessing Samuel jumped 11.32m in the triple jump.
Shot Put and Weight Throw
In the women’s Shot Put and weight throw events, Rejoice Agbawodie demonstrated her strength with throws of 12.59 meters and 14.02 meters, respectively.
1 Mile and 5000m Races
Vanee Anchike and Rosemary Arthur competed in the women’s 1-mile race, clocking times of 4:58.04 and 5:08.96, respectively. In the women’s 5000m, Vanee Ancike completed the race in 17:38.95
