Bismark Kobby Mensah, newly appointed assistant coach of Kenyan Premier League side Gor Mahia FC, has shed light on his decision to take up the role, citing limited financial incentives in Ghanaian football and a desire to take on new challenges on the continent.

Speaking in an interview following his appointment, the Ghanaian tactician, emphasised the sacrifices he has made in the Ghanaian league over the years.

“I have done enough coaching in Ghana, making many sacrifices along the way,” he said. “There isn’t much financial reward for coaches in Ghanaian football, despite the passion and effort we put into our work. I believe the time has come for me to seek better opportunities elsewhere.”

Mensah described Gor Mahia as a prestigious club with rich history and great ambition.

“Gor Mahia is a big club—not just in Kenya, but across African football. It is a great platform for me to showcase my ability at a higher level and to contribute to the club’s success both domestically and continentally,” he added.

His appointment has been met with optimism by the club’s faithful, as Gor Mahia look to reinforce their dominance in Kenyan football and make an impact in the CAF inter-club competitions. The experienced Ghanaian coach is expected to bring tactical discipline, player development expertise, and a competitive edge to the Nairobi-based club.

Mensah and Akonnor now becomes one of the few Ghanaian coaches to take up a high-profile role in East African football, marking a significant step in his career.
