Former Ghana international Michael Essien has signed a new two-year contract to continue as assistant coach at Danish club FC Nordsjælland.
With his previous deal nearing its expiry, the club has confirmed that the 42-year-old will remain part of the coaching set-up for the upcoming season.
Essien initially joined Nordsjælland as a player-coach before officially becoming a member of the technical team on 9 September 2020. Since then, he has become an integral figure within the coaching staff.
He currently holds a UEFA A Licence and has completed specialised UEFA courses in football management and organisation.
As a player, Essien represented Ghana at the 2006 and 2014 FIFA World Cups and earned 59 caps for the Black Stars. His club career saw him feature for Bastia, Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Panathinaikos, Persib Bandung in Indonesia, and Sabail in Azerbaijan.
In 2024, he turned down an offer to serve as assistant coach of the Ghana national team under Otto Addo, choosing instead to remain focused on his role at FC Nordsjælland.
