Ruben Amorim has declared his desire to be the manager of Manchester United for the next 20 years, signaling a bold long-term vision for the club after a challenging debut season.

Taking charge in November 2024, the 40-year-old Portuguese coach replaced Erik ten Hag but presided over United’s worst Premier League finish since the 1973-74 campaign.

Speaking ahead of the 2025-26 season, Amorim said, “I want to stay, I want to stay 20 [years]. That is my goal and I truly believe in that” while admitting results will ultimately decide his future.

Amorim’s first season in charge was difficult.

Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League, their lowest standing in more than five decades, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, marking their 20th defeat across all competitions this season, the club’s most since 1973-74.

Over 42 games, Amorim’s record stands at 17 wins, 8 draws, and 17 losses, with 1.40 points per game on average. Although the season ended without silverware or European football next year, the coach remains optimistic about turning things around.

Despite the setbacks, Amorim is preparing for his first full season, beginning with a tough opener against Arsenal on August 17. Contracted to United until 2027 with an option for an extra year, he acknowledges he has “used all the credits” but is ready to start fresh.

The manager stresses that luck plays a part in longevity, saying, “In some moments I will be lucky. I had a lot of luck during my career as a manager and my idea is to stay for many years.”

Looking ahead, Amorim is confident that Manchester United will regain their status among England’s elite. He points to the club’s “pedigree, history, and fans” as intangible assets that can’t be bought, alongside financial resources that remain strong even without Champions League revenue.

Amorim highlights strategic financial planning by the club’s leadership to maintain and grow funds. He also believes that establishing a new cultural identity at Old Trafford is key to restoring the club’s winning tradition.

In pursuit of this vision, Amorim has reorganized United’s leadership, creating a six-man leadership group to foster team responsibility and accountability.

With hopes to build a culture that withstands challenges, he is determined to emulate Sir Alex Ferguson’s era of stability and success.

While the upcoming season will be a critical test, Amorim’s commitment to a long tenure sets a tone of patience and ambition at Old Trafford.
