“I was ready to move to Saudi Arabia, but my village people had other plans” — Victor Boniface

Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has shared a humorous yet insightful story about a major career decision he nearly made—accepting a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia.

“I had a very attractive offer from Saudi Arabia, and given my injury history, I genuinely considered it,” Boniface explained. “I thought to myself, if I go there, I could play two seasons, earn well and secure my future.”

“At the same time, I also had an offer from a top club in Italy. I called my brother, and he advised me to go to Italy. He said I should pursue the chance to play in the World Cup, the Champions League and other major competitions.”

However, the plot took an amusing twist shortly after.

“A few hours later, my brother rang me back—he had seen the Saudi offer on Tunde Ednut’s page—and said, ‘You know what? You should go to Saudi.’”

Boniface was convinced. “So I agreed. I was fully prepared. I packed my bags and, because the money was so good, I even gave away some of my expensive designer clothes to my friends. I checked into a hotel, ready to make the move.”

But then, fate—or as he put it, superstition—intervened.

“My village people were like, ‘Let’s see if you can actually leave.’”

He laughed off the experience, but his story highlights the difficult decisions footballers face between financial gain and competitive ambition.
