Ghana’s swimming icon, Abeku Jackson, is once again set to lead the nation’s charge as he spearheads a four-member squad to the 2025 World Aquatics Swimming Championships, scheduled to take place in Singapore from 27 July to 3 August.
Jackson, 25, a seasoned competitor at numerous international events and Ghana’s undisputed number one swimmer, will compete in the 50m and 100m butterfly, in addition to the mixed 4x100m freestyle and mixed medley relay events.
A consistent presence on the international stage, Jackson remains Ghana’s leading medal prospect. He will be aiming to improve on his personal bests and make an even greater impression at the global level.
Joining him on the team are United States-based Harry Stacey, Paris 2024 Olympian Joselle Mensah, and UK-based Nubia Adjei — forming a formidable quartet ready to make waves in Singapore.
Stacey, fresh from his Olympic debut and a standout showing at last year’s Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships in Accra — where he was named Best Swimmer — is expected to contest the same events as Jackson, providing strength and depth to the men’s competition.
In the women’s events, Joselle Mensah will headline Ghana’s campaign in the 50m and 100m freestyle, while Adjei will feature in the 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke.
The four athletes will also combine for the mixed 4x100m freestyle and medley relays, bringing together a promising mix of experience, power, and youthful enthusiasm.
Team Ghana will be officially led by Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) President, Delphina Quaye, and the General Secretary, Mohammed Muniru Kassim. Jackson is scheduled to travel from Accra on 23 July, with the remaining swimmers expected to fly in from their respective international training bases.
While medal finishes may be an ambitious target in such a fiercely competitive field, the primary objectives for Team Ghana remain clear: achieving new personal bests, gaining valuable experience, and building momentum towards future international events — including the Commonwealth Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
In a landmark development, veteran Ghanaian official Simon Asaah has been appointed to officiate at both the World Aquatics Swimming Championships and the World Aquatics Masters Championships — becoming the first Ghanaian to receive a dual appointment at these prestigious events.
His selection marks a significant milestone for Ghana’s technical officials on the global stage. Until now, Ghanaian referees including Kwami Kpodoh, Farida Iddris, and Asaah himself had officiated at single editions of the FINA World Championships, held respectively in the UAE (2015), China (2018), and Doha (2024).
