Jerome Okyere Slams Proposed GFA Term Limit Amendment as ‘Selfish and Irresponsible’

Former Asante Kotoko Communications Director, Jerome Okyere, has strongly criticised the reported proposal to amend the Ghana Football Association (GFA) constitution to allow a sitting president to extend their stay beyond the current term limit. He described the move as “selfish, immoral, and irresponsible,” warning that such an amendment could have far-reaching consequences for the integrity of football administration in the country.

Okyere’s comments come amid growing public concern over attempts to alter the two-term, four-year limit enshrined in the GFA’s constitution. Introduced as a safeguard to prevent the abuse of power and promote leadership renewal, the term limit is seen by many as a cornerstone of democratic governance within the sport.

“The idea of removing or extending the presidential term limit not only defies the spirit of good governance but also risks setting a dangerous precedent,” Okyere stated. “It sends the wrong message to young professionals and aspiring football leaders—that clinging to power is more important than transparency, accountability, and progress.”

Several football stakeholders, including club administrators, sports journalists, and civil society actors, have echoed Okyere’s sentiments, urging the GFA Executive Council to respect the constitutional order and prioritise reforms that benefit the broader football ecosystem rather than individual ambitions.

The debate over constitutional amendments comes at a time when Ghanaian football is already under scrutiny over issues relating to transparency, officiating standards, and club development. Critics argue that any attempt to extend presidential tenure could derail the progress made since the Normalisation Committee era, which sought to restore credibility to the GFA following a period of crisis.

As discussions continue, there are growing calls for a more inclusive and transparent consultation process that puts the interests of Ghana football first.
