Ghana coach James Kwesi Appiah’s bid to get Sudan’s National Men’s Football Team into the final of this year’s CHAN tournament has come to an end.

Sudan lost 1-0 to Madagascar in the semifinals of the competition where only African players who compete in their respective national leagues are eligible to participate.

Despite having a numerical advantage for almost a full hour of the contest that was played out over 120 minutes, Toky Niaina’s finish off a well worked move by Madagascar in the 116th minute was more than enough to secure the win.

Gilles Razafimaro was shown a straight red card in the 79th minute for catching a Sudanese player with his elbow. After a VAR review, the incident was deemed rash enough to warrant a red card after he initially got shown a yellow card.

Battling against the odds stemming from a war-torn country, Sudan’s run in the CHAN competition could still end with a bronze medal win as the Falcons of Jediane will compete in third place game on Friday, August 29 at 15:00 GMT.
