Leeds United Appoint Club Legend Lucas Radebe as Official Ambassador

English side Leeds United have confirmed the appointment of their iconic former defender and South African football legend, Lucas Radebe, as an official club ambassador.

Radebe, affectionately nicknamed ‘The Chief’, captained both Leeds United and the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, during an illustrious career. He joined the Yorkshire club in 1994 from Kaizer Chiefs and went on to make over 250 appearances, becoming one of the most respected figures in the club’s history.

Known for his leadership, composure in defence and commitment on and off the pitch, Radebe played a pivotal role during Leeds United’s memorable run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2001. His influence also extended beyond football, with former South African President Nelson Mandela once describing him as a true role model for the youth of his country.

As part of his new role, Radebe will represent Leeds United at official functions, strengthen the club’s ties with supporters worldwide, and help expand its presence in Africa, where he remains a hugely admired figure.

Leeds United Chairman Paraag Marathe hailed the appointment, emphasising that Radebe’s legacy at Elland Road makes him the perfect figure to inspire the next generation of fans.

Radebe expressed his delight at the honour, stating that Leeds United has always been close to his heart and that he looks forward to serving the club in this new capacity.
