Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has urged Ghanaians and football supporters to rally behind Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey, insisting that the player should be presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.
In a strongly worded statement, Ampofo Ankrah expressed concern over what he described as sustained criticism and negative media attention directed at the Ghana international by some sections of the foreign media. According to him, such actions risk affecting the player’s focus and morale at a crucial stage of his career and could also have implications for the national team.
“Thomas Partey needs our full support. He is innocent until proven otherwise. The suggestion by some foreign media portals that England players might refuse to shake his hands when the two teams meet should be ignored. Focus is key,” Ampofo Ankrah stated.
The NSA boss further stressed that fairness, due process and respect for the rule of law must prevail, warning against the tendency to rush to judgement before any legal proceedings have been concluded.
He also criticised what he described as attempts by some media outlets to create unnecessary distractions around the player, arguing that such narratives could have a destabilising effect on both Partey and the Black Stars.
“Thomas Partey deserves our full support. He remains innocent until proven otherwise. Some of the attacks being directed at him by sections of the media appear aimed at destabilising both the player and the team,” he added.
Partey, one of Ghana’s most influential footballers in recent years, has been a key figure for both club and country. The midfielder has played a pivotal role in the Black Stars setup, providing leadership, experience and quality in the heart of midfield. His performances have made him one of Ghana’s most recognisable sporting figures on the international stage.
The comments from the NSA Director-General come at a time when discussions surrounding the player continue to generate significant debate among football fans and media outlets. While opinions remain divided, Ampofo Ankrah’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment among some Ghanaian football stakeholders who believe the player should be afforded the same legal protections and presumption of innocence guaranteed to every individual.
Supporters of the Black Stars will be hoping that the ongoing attention surrounding Partey does not distract the team as Ghana continues its preparations for upcoming international assignments. For Ampofo Ankrah, the priority remains ensuring that the midfielder stays focused on his football while receiving the backing of a nation that has benefitted immensely from his commitment and performances over the years.
The issue is expected to remain a major talking point within Ghanaian football circles asking if these happening will have effect on the player during Ghana’s World cup game against England.
