Official: Mourinho Returns to Benfica on Two-Year Deal with Early Exit Clause

Benfica today officially announced the appointment of José Mourinho as their new head coach, having signed a two-year contract that runs through to the end of the 2026/27 season.

As part of the agreement, there is a mutual option in place: either Benfica or Mourinho may elect not to continue into the second year — that is, for the 2026/27 season — provided written notice is given within 10 days after the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign.

Mourinho, aged 62, returns to Benfica 25 years after his first spell at the club, this time charged with steering the team back to domestic and European success.

Benfica’s President, Rui Costa, described the deal as a strategic move to restore the club’s winning tradition, pointing to Mourinho’s exceptional track record at top European clubs. The appointment follows the departure of Bruno Lage, who was relieved of his duties after a 3-2 home defeat to Qarabag in the Champions League.

Under Mourinho, Benfica will next compete in the Champions League group stage, where they will face former clubs including Chelsea and Real Madrid.
