President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday received the Democracy Cup trophy from the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, at the Jubilee House in Accra.

The presentation forms part of activities marking the second edition of the Democracy Cup, a football competition instituted by Parliament to celebrate Ghana’s democratic journey and promote national unity.

This year’s match will see traditional rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics face off on 5 September at the University of Ghana Stadium. The fixture is expected to draw large crowds, with supporters eager to witness the two historic clubs battle for supremacy.

In his brief remarks, President Mahama commended Parliament for using sport as a tool to deepen democracy and foster social cohesion, while Speaker Bagbin expressed confidence that the competition would become a permanent feature on the national sporting calendar.
