Saint Anthony Catholic and A.M.E Zion Schools Dominate Senya Athletics Championship as Organisers Praise Emerging Talent

The Senya Basic Schools Athletics Competition concluded in thrilling fashion after three days of intense track and field action at Senya Senior High School Park in the Awutu-senya west of the Central Region.

In the Junior High School (JHS) Boys Division, Saint Anthony Catholic Basic emerged overall champions, securing an impressive medal haul of five gold, five silver and one bronze medal to top the standings.

The JHS Girls Division ended in a remarkable tie between A.M.E Zion ‘A’ Basic and A.M.E Zion ‘C’ Basic. Both schools finished with three gold, three silver and one bronze medal each, underlining the fierce yet friendly rivalry between the two institutions.

At the primary level, Jehovah Shammah School Complex claimed the Primary Boys Division title after winning three gold medals. Meanwhile, A.M.E Zion ‘A’ Basic dominated the Primary Girls Division with an outstanding six gold and three silver medals, finishing without a bronze.

Individual Excellence Recognised

Several athletes delivered exceptional performances and were honoured as Best Athletes in their respective categories.

JHS Girls: Grace Aidoo of A.M.E Zion ‘A’ Basic won gold in the 800 metres and 1,500 metres and anchored her school’s mixed medley relay team to second place.

JHS Boys: Best Athlete honours were shared between Ebenezer Essel of A.M.E Zion ‘A’ Basic and David Bonney of Christian Atsu Educational Centre. Essel won gold in the javelin, shot put and discus, while Bonney triumphed in the 800 metres, 1,500 metres and 5,000 metres. Both exhausted their three individual event slots and did not compete in relays.

Primary Boys: Master Prince Acquah of Jehovah Shammah School Complex completed a sprint treble, winning the 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres.

Primary Girls: Yvonne Mireku of Senya Methodist A&B Basic impressed by winning the long jump, triple jump and high jump.

Organisers expressed immense delight at the high standard of talent displayed. “We are elated to witness such discipline, determination and skill among these young athletes,” one official remarked. “The level of competition over the past three days has truly exceeded our expectations.”

They also extended heartfelt thanks to the event’s sponsors: Clockwise Services (Mr Alex Andorful), Ascona Printing Press (Mr Isaac Effum), and Kanea Foundation, based in Ghana and the UK. “Their support has been invaluable in making this championship possible,” organisers added.

The competition, which brought together 24 basic schools from across the area, has been widely praised for promoting grassroots sports development, teamwork and sportsmanship among pupils, while identifying promising athletes for future district, regional and national competitions.
