Former Accra Hearts of Oak playmaker Salifu Ibrahim has officially agreed to switch his international allegiance from Ghana to Benin, paving the way for his inclusion in the Squirrels’ squad ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The talented midfielder, who currently plays for FC Drita in the Kosovan top flight, is said to have completed the necessary paperwork to represent Benin at senior international level. According to reports from both Ghanaian and Beninese football circles, the Benin Football Federation has been monitoring the player’s progress for several months and sees him as a valuable addition to their creative midfield setup.

Salifu, 24, rose to prominence during his time with Hearts of Oak, where he played a key role in their 2020/21 Ghana Premier League and FA Cup double-winning campaign. His impressive vision, passing range, and technical ability earned him several domestic accolades, including a nomination for the Ghana Premier League Player of the Season.

Although he was once tipped for a call-up to the Black Stars, limited opportunities at international level are believed to have influenced his decision to represent Benin, where he is expected to enjoy more playing time and international exposure.

If selected, Salifu Ibrahim will make his debut for Benin during the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, where the Squirrels aim to make a strong impression on the continental stage.
