“Sammy Adjei Was In A Different World” – Ex-Hearts & Kotoko Goalkeeper Sani Mohammed Pays Emotional Tribute To Black Stars Legend
Former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Alhaji Sani Mohammed has paid glowing tribute to ex-Black Stars and Hearts of Oak legend Sammy “Bamako” Adjei, describing him as a goalkeeper who operated “in a different world” during his playing days.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with SportsnetghTV, Sani Mohammed reflected on his early days at Hearts of Oak after joining the club from Power FC during the 2001/2002 league season.
According to the former shot-stopper, arriving at the Phobians was both exciting and intimidating, as he had to compete with some of the most experienced goalkeepers in Ghanaian football at the time, including James Narnor, Eben Dida and Laud Quartey.
However, Sani admitted that Sammy Adjei stood out above the rest whenever he was between the posts.
“When I joined Hearts of Oak, I met very experienced goalkeepers, but Sammy Adjei was exceptional. Anytime he was in the post, you could clearly see he was operating at a different level,” Sani Mohammed revealed.
The former Kotoko goalkeeper further disclosed that his admiration for Adjei started long before they became teammates. During his secondary school days, he would often sneak out to watch the legendary goalkeeper in action for both Hearts of Oak and the Black Stars.
He explained that Sammy Adjei’s commanding presence, confidence and match-winning performances inspired many young goalkeepers across the country at the time.
“As a young student, I admired Sammy so much. I used to sneak out just to watch him play for Hearts and the Black Stars. So, when I eventually got the opportunity to share the same dressing room with him, it felt like a dream come true and a turning point in my football career,” he added.
Despite the fierce competition for the number one spot at Hearts of Oak, Sani Mohammed credited former goalkeeper James Narnor for helping him settle at the club and encouraging him not to give up.
According to him, the intense competition initially made him consider leaving the club, but Narnor’s guidance and support gave him the confidence to remain patient and continue working hard.
“James Narnor was a fantastic person to be around. At one point, I wanted to give up because of the quality and experience around me, but he kept encouraging me to stay focused. He always told me my time would come, and eventually it did when I became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper,” Sani stated.
Sani Mohammed remains one of the notable goalkeepers to have represented both Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, two of Ghana’s biggest football clubs, during his career.
