Ghanaian boxing sensation Samuel Takyi, widely regarded as one of the keys to restoring Ghana’s rich boxing heritage, is set for another career-defining moment.

Takyi, famously known as “The Ring Warrior”, remains Ghana’s sole medallist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where he captured bronze in the men’s featherweight (57kg) division—also becoming Africa’s only boxing medallist at the Games. He further cemented his pedigree by clinching gold at the 13th African Games in Accra earlier this year, competing in the light-welterweight (63.3kg) division.

The 23-year-old will now step into the ring in Lagos, Nigeria, as he challenges for the prestigious World Boxing Organization (WBO) Youth Lightweight Title. His opponent, Nigeria’s rising star Fatiu Ijomoni, aged just 19, is eager to make a statement in front of his home fans.

The title bout is scheduled for Wednesday, 1st October 2025, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, forming part of the celebrations marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

The showdown promises to be a thrilling encounter between two of West Africa’s brightest boxing prospects, with Takyi determined to bring the belt home to Ghana as he continues his mission to restore the nation’s former glory in world boxing.
