The Ghana U-20 national team, known as the Black Satellites, secured the bronze medal on home soil with a 2-0 victory over ten-man Niger at the 2025 WAFU U-20 tournament.
The match, played on Wednesday at the Legon Sports Stadium, was not without controversy. A contentious moment occurred in the 56th minute when referee Tuoniféré Soro awarded Ghana a penalty after Nigerien defender Adamou Ibrahim Djibo handled a shot from Aziz Musibau in the box.
In protest, the Nigerien players temporarily walked off the pitch, halting the match. Play resumed ten minutes later after they returned to the field.
Musibau stepped up and confidently converted the penalty in the 59th minute to give Ghana the lead. The Black Satellites pressed for a second, with Twumasi Opoku rattling the crossbar with a powerful header in the 75th minute.
Ghana doubled their advantage in the 78th minute. A well-placed cross from winger Kelvin Nkrumah on the right flank found Musibau, who calmly slotted the ball home for his second goal of the match.
Niger were reduced to ten men in added time after defender Bakary Mahamadou received a second yellow card in the 95th minute. The Junior Menas had a late chance for a consolation, but Abdoul-Latif Djibril’s effort was comfortably gathered by Ghana goalkeeper Gidios Aseako.
Referee Soro brought the match to a close after the allocated time, confirming Ghana’s third-place finish in the regional tournament.
