Ezah Applauds Otto Addo’s “Brave and Strategic” Black Stars Selection

General Manager of Parin FC and former Secretary-General of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana(SWAG), William Ezah, has lauded Black Stars head coach Otto Addo for what he describes as a bold and forward-thinking squad selection ahead of Ghana’s upcoming international assignments.

Ezah’s comments come in the wake of Addo’s announcement of a 26-man squad for high-profile friendly matches against Germany and Austria later this month—fixtures widely viewed as crucial preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In an exclusive interview with SportsnetghTv Ezah noted that the list reflects continuity, discipline and a clearly defined technical direction. He pointed out that the majority of players invited have been part of Addo’s setup since his return, suggesting that the coach is focused on building cohesion rather than making reactionary selections based solely on short-term form.

According to Ezah, the inclusion of a blend of emerging talents and established internationals highlights a deliberate attempt by the technical team to create competition within the squad while gradually transitioning into a new core. He stressed that such matches against top European opposition present a valuable opportunity for the players to test themselves at the highest level and for the coaching staff to assess tactical flexibility, mental strength and team chemistry.

The omission of André Ayew, despite his impressive performances for NAC Breda, has been one of the most talked-about decisions. However, Ezah insisted that it was entirely in line with the coach’s recent approach.

He explained that Ayew—affectionately known as “Dede”—has not featured prominently in Addo’s plans in recent months, even during periods when public pressure mounted for his return. In his view, the decision signals a shift towards a new leadership structure within the team, with the technical bench prioritising players who fit into its evolving tactical philosophy and long-term project.

Ezah further emphasised that while Ayew’s experience and leadership qualities remain unquestionable, national team selection must ultimately align with the coach’s vision and system. He urged supporters to respect the decision and rally behind the current squad.

He also highlighted the importance of the upcoming friendlies, noting that matches against technically disciplined sides like Germany and Austria will provide a true measure of the team’s progress under Addo. He believes the games will offer critical insights into areas such as defensive organisation, midfield control and attacking efficiency.

“This is a process,” he noted. “The coach has shown clarity in his selections, and it is important that we allow him the space to build a team capable of competing at the highest level.”
