Nyarko Questions Black Stars Unity, Backs André Ayew’s 2026 World Cup Inclusion

Former Accra Hearts of Oak midfielder and current head coach of Parin FC, Eric Nyarko, has shared his thoughts on national team selection, his playing career, and the future of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars.

In an exclusive interview with SportsnetghTv, Eric Nyarko stated that representing one’s country remains the ultimate ambition for every footballer. Reflecting on his own career, he acknowledged that he faced stiff competition during his prime, with several established and experienced players ahead of him in the national team pecking order.

He pointed out that during the peak years of players like Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari—who were playing for top English clubs such as Chelsea FC and Portsmouth FC respectively—he was plying his trade in the Israeli league. According to him, the disparity in competitive levels made it difficult to draw comparisons or earn a place in the national team at the time.

“I have no regrets about not featuring for the Black Stars,” Nyarko emphasised.

Turning his attention to the current squad, Nyarko expressed concern despite Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He noted that while the team has secured a place at the tournament, there are issues that need addressing if the side is to progress beyond the group stage.

“Honestly, I do not see the unity and teamwork among the current crop of players compared to previous generations,” he said. “The inconsistency is also worrying.”

Nyarko highlighted the strong understanding that once existed among former teammates such as Essien, Muntari and Stephen Appiah, who played together for several years and developed excellent chemistry on the pitch.

“That cohesion is not quite evident in the current team, and it is a concern for Ghana football,” he added.

The Parin FC coach also stressed the importance of blending experienced players with emerging talents, describing it as a key ingredient for success in international football.

On the subject of captain André Ayew, Nyarko backed his inclusion in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. He believes Ayew’s leadership, experience and technical ability remain valuable assets to the team.

“As long as he is still active and has not retired, he deserves to be part of the squad,” Nyarko stated. “The younger, energetic players can provide the drive, while André Ayew contributes with his experience and technical quality to help the team achieve success at the World Cup.”
