Host nation Ghana ended the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra without a gold medal, as the national team narrowly missed out on top podium finishes during the week-long continental competition.

The championship, held from 12 to 17 May at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, brought together some of Africa’s finest track and field athletes in a thrilling showcase of speed, endurance and talent.

Despite strong home support and several encouraging performances, Ghana’s national anthem was not heard during the medal ceremonies, with the hosts settling for a number of silver and bronze medals across various events.

Expectations had been high for the Ghanaian contingent heading into the biennial championship, particularly with the advantage of competing on home soil in front of passionate local fans. However, fierce competition from some of the continent’s athletics powerhouses ultimately denied Ghana a place at the top of the podium.

Nevertheless, the championships provided several positive moments for the host nation, as a number of Ghanaian athletes produced determined and spirited displays against elite continental opposition.

Officials and athletics stakeholders have praised the resilience and commitment shown by the team throughout the competition, insisting the experience gained in Accra will prove invaluable for the development of Ghanaian athletics in the years ahead.

Beyond the medal standings, the successful hosting of the championships was viewed as a significant achievement for Ghana, with the event attracting large crowds and further highlighting the country’s growing capacity to stage major international sporting competitions.

Attention will now shift to upcoming regional and global events, where Ghana will hope to build on the lessons learned in Accra and transform promising performances into gold medal success on the international stage.
