FIFA President Gianni Infantino wants Russia to be pardon
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reiterated his opposition to the politicisation of football, expressing support for the eventual lifting of the ban imposed on Russian football following the outbreak of the Russia–Ukraine conflict.
Speaking amid ongoing global tensions, Infantino emphasised that football should remain a unifying force rather than a tool for political expression or division. He argued that the sport’s primary role is to bring people together across borders, cultures and ideologies, even during periods of international crisis.
Russia has been suspended from FIFA and UEFA competitions since 2022, a decision taken in response to the country’s military actions in Ukraine. The ban has prevented Russian national teams and clubs from participating in international tournaments, including World Cup qualifiers and European competitions.
While acknowledging the sensitivity of the situation and the broader geopolitical implications, Infantino suggested that football governing bodies should continuously assess whether sanctions serve the long-term interests of the game. He indicated that reintegration, when conditions allow, could help promote dialogue and understanding rather than further isolation.
“Football should not be dragged into political conflicts,” Infantino has consistently maintained, stressing that the sport must remain neutral and inclusive. He added that FIFA’s mission is to develop football globally and ensure that players and fans are not unduly punished for decisions taken beyond the pitch.
Infantino’s comments are likely to reignite debate within the global football community, where opinions remain divided over whether sporting sanctions are an appropriate response to international conflicts. While some stakeholders argue that maintaining the ban sends a strong moral message, others believe that football should operate independently of political disputes.
As the situation evolves, FIFA is expected to continue consultations with its member associations and international partners before taking any definitive steps regarding Russia’s potential return to global football competitions.
