Chippa United have confirmed the departure of Nigeria international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, bringing an end to a four-year spell that transformed both the player’s career and the club’s profile between the posts.

The 29-year-old leaves the South African top-flight club by mutual agreement after formally requesting his release, a move the club sanctioned on Thursday.

Nwabali’s exit closes a chapter defined by steady progression and growing recognition. Initially signed in 2022 from Katsina United (Nigeria) as a relatively low-profile acquisition, he developed into Chippa United’s undisputed first choice and one of the most reliable goalkeepers in South Africa.

His consistency at club level carried over to the international stage, where he established himself as a regular for the Super Eagles and earned a reputation as one of Africa’s standout shot-stoppers.

During his time in Gqeberha, Nwabali made 76 appearances across competitions and recorded 25 clean sheets, often playing a decisive role in tight contests. Those performances inevitably drew interest from abroad.

He was linked with potential moves to England and Saudi Arabia, while domestic heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs were also reported to be monitoring his situation.

Despite the speculation, Chippa United managed to retain him over the past two seasons, valuing both his influence on the pitch and his leadership within the squad.

The club confirmed that the separation followed a formal request from the player, which was accepted after discussions between both parties.

In a statement, Chippa United thanked Nwabali for his professionalism and commitment, acknowledging the impact he made during his tenure and wishing him success in the next phase of his career.

For Nwabali, the timing of the departure adds an element of intrigue. He leaves outside the official transfer window, raising questions about his immediate destination and whether a move has already been lined up. Given his international standing and recent form, interest is expected to be strong once the window reopens.

Chippa United, meanwhile, face the task of replacing a goalkeeper who became central to their identity over the past four years. Nwabali’s departure marks the end of an era for the club, while opening the door to what promises to be a significant next step in his career.
