CAA Endorses Ghana’s Readiness for 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships
Ghana has received a major boost in its preparations for the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships after a high-level delegation from the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) expressed strong satisfaction with the country’s readiness.

The inspection team, led by CAA Chief Executive Officer Lamine Fati and Head of TV Production Melinda Lomba, visited the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Thursday, 9 April 2026, to assess key facilities ahead of the continental showpiece.
Following a thorough tour of the competition venue and operational areas, Fati commended the Ghanaian government and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for their commitment and level of preparation.
“I want to thank the Ghanaian government for the arrangements and facilities provided to make our mission successful,” he said. “We are here to inspect all facilities and preparations to ensure these championships are delivered to the highest standard.”
The delegation also evaluated accommodation arrangements, visiting a number of designated hotels for athletes, officials and invited guests. Fati revealed that the team was impressed by what they encountered.
“We toured the hotels where athletes, officials and guests will be accommodated, and we are very satisfied. The facilities are of a very high standard, and we have no concerns in that regard,” he noted.
On the critical issue of anti-doping, the CAA chief highlighted productive engagements with the Ghana National Anti-Doping Organisation, describing the collaboration as encouraging.
“We had very fruitful discussions with NADO here in Ghana and received valuable information. This coordination will continue with our anti-doping delegates, and so far, everything is progressing well,” he added.
Logistical preparations, including international travel arrangements, are also nearing completion, further boosting confidence within the CAA ranks.
“We have been assured that all flight reservations will be finalised by the end of this week. While there are still a few areas to review, overall, we can say we are ready and looking forward to a successful competition,” Fati said.
Drawing on previous experience, Fati expressed confidence in Ghana’s ability to deliver another memorable event, referencing the country’s successful hosting of past continental competitions.
“We know what Ghana is capable of. Our previous experience here was excellent, with strong collaboration from both officials and administrative staff. We expect similar conditions that will allow athletes to perform at their best.”
President of the Ghana Athletics, Bawah Fuseini, welcomed the feedback, describing the visit as both constructive and insightful.
“Lamine is a friend, but he is also very strict and professional. If something is not right, he will say it plainly. So far, he has offered very valuable advice,” Fuseini remarked.
He added that engagements with key stakeholders, including the Ministry and the LOC, had been highly productive, with particular focus on technical readiness at the stadium.
“Today’s inspection covers our equipment, the track and the office spaces allocated for CAA officials when they arrive in Accra. Everything is progressing well.”
The 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships are scheduled to take place from 12 to 17 May 2026 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra, with Ghana poised to welcome the continent’s finest athletes for what promises to be a thrilling and well-organised competition.
