Yussif Chibsah Calls for Black Stars Quota for Ghana Premier League Players

Former Asante Kotoko and Ghana midfielder Yussif Chibsah has urged football authorities to introduce a quota system that guarantees places for players from the Ghana Premier League in the national team, insisting local talent must no longer be overlooked.

Speaking to Citi TV, Chibsah said the continued exclusion of home-based players from the Black Stars setup risks slowing the development of both the players and the domestic game.

“We cannot continue to ignore Ghana Premier League players,” Chibsah stated. “There must be a quota system to ensure they are represented in the Black Stars. It is about giving them opportunities to prove themselves. If you do not provide the platform, how can we assess them at the highest level?”

The former midfielder argued that national team call-ups should not be reserved solely for players based abroad, stressing that regular inclusion of standout performers from the local league would boost confidence, raise standards, and increase the competitiveness of the domestic competition.

According to Chibsah, creating a clear pathway from the Ghana Premier League to the national team would motivate young footballers across the country and encourage clubs to invest more in player development.

His comments come amid ongoing debate over the balance between foreign-based stars and home-based players in the Black Stars squad. In recent years, supporters and analysts have repeatedly questioned whether enough opportunities are being given to players excelling in the domestic league.

Many observers believe stronger representation for local players could also improve attendance, sponsorship interest, and overall public confidence in the Ghana Premier League, as fans would see the competition as a genuine route to international football.

Chibsah’s remarks are likely to resonate with followers of Ghanaian football who have long called for greater recognition of home-grown talent and a stronger connection between the national team and the local game.
