Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, have been handed a favourable route in the opening stages of the African qualifiers for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games after being drawn against the winner of the first-round tie between Mauritius and Djibouti.

The draw means Ghana will enter the campaign in the second round, having received a bye from the preliminary stage due to their superior ranking on the continent. It is an encouraging boost for the Black Queens as they begin their pursuit of a return to the Olympic stage.

According to the Confederation of African Football, the second-round fixtures are scheduled to be played between 5 October and 13 October 2026, with Ghana awaiting the outcome of the Mauritius-Djibouti encounter.

While the draw offers a promising start, the road to Los Angeles remains demanding. The Black Queens will still need to progress through three additional knockout rounds to secure one of Africa’s coveted places at the women’s football tournament at LA 2028.

The latest development has already generated excitement among supporters, with many hopeful that Ghana can build on recent progress and re-establish themselves among Africa’s leading women’s football nations.

With qualification now firmly on the horizon, attention will soon turn to preparations, squad planning and the challenge of ensuring the Black Queens are ready to seize their opportunity when October arrives.
